Where to Enjoy Award winning films
The Academy Awards, which are also known as the Oscars, are the pinnacle of the film industry. They recognise the best work across a range of categories from within the films released each year.
The awards have a deep and well respected history, dating back to 1929 with the first ceremony held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. They are the oldest entertainment awards in history, with 24 categories in total and the top award being the “Academy Award of Merit”.
So how does a film get nominated for an Academy Award? The Academy is a membership organisation, made up of 7,000 voting members. Members have to be within the film-industry, and the majority of these members are US-based with around 50% being film makers.
The nomination process comes down to votes from members, but is quite complex as in some categories only certain members can vote. For example, only Directors can vote within the Best Director category. However, once the nominees have been decided, all members can then vote to determine the winners within each category. The process is managed by accounting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers each year.
Nominations generally open in January (for films the calendar year prior), and the awards ceremony takes place in March. The event brings out Americas most famous stars, with ladies fashion one of the focal points. The red carpet entry is always heavily populated by the world’s media who interview stars as they arrive.
The award selection process has not always been smooth sailing. In 2017, the award for Best Picture was incorrectly announced as La La Land instead of Moonlight. A year earlier, for the second year running, there were only white actors and actresses up for nomination. This fact was well noticed, with industry representatives trending the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
If you’re looking for a film to watch, then one that’s been recognised as a Best Picture with an Oscar is a great place to start. Some titles to consider are The Shape of Water, The King’s Speech, Dunkirk, La La Land, Moonlight, Silence of the Lambs and Dances With Wolves.
